People turned up in their thousands for Day 1 of Rhyl’s FREE 2010 Air Show.
Slight frustrations at some scheduled events being cancelled, but this was the warm up.
Tomorrow see’s the main event.
The appearance of the RAF Hawk was cancelled due to the well publicised problems with the RAF Hawk’s ejector seats.
A hastily arranged display by a Jet Provost was lined up as a replacement, but again, gremlins got in the way.
The first action in the air eventually came at 2pm.
The official programme had him down as Steve Carter, but am I right in assuming it was infact Steve Carver?
Either way, he wasn’t mentioned in the advertised schedule but arrived and put on a great display to a, by now, massive gallery.
Next up, and quite by surprise, the Red Arrows turned up in Vulcan formation to do a single flypast.
The RAF Falcons were next.
The team arrived and did a few recce’s, but the low cloud meant that the display was aborted.
Finally, The Lancaster Bomber but on a fantastic display.
The drone of the 4 Merlin engines was a spectacle in itself.
The Military Village was interesting, with the Chinook and Typhoon Cockpit seemingly being the busiest attractions.
A good variety of service themed stalls line the events arena and a few fairground rides added to the mix.
Hats off to the organisers, day 1 was a great success.
The few cancelled displays were out of their control. A few bonusses thrown in made up for this though.
The timings for day 2, Sunday 8th, as published in the official programme are as follows…………….
1400 Red Arrows
1432 Gerald Cooper Aerobatic Display
1442 The Yakovlev’s
1459 Team Brietling Wing Walkers
1516 Red 10 Helicopter Departs
1523 Hawker Hunter
1533 Spitfire T9
1544 RAF Falcons
See you there!!!
